"A typical Strigalev collision of hip jazz virtuosity and surrealism . . . Strigalev's alto displays bebop agility, shivery lyricism, or sometimes a bluesy Ornetteish swerves." – The Guardian

"Always it's a surreal, impressive brew" – Jazzwise

JZ Replacement is a dynamic new international project from saxophonist Zhenya Strigalev (Ambrose Akinmusire, Eric Harland) and drummer Jamie Murray (Sun Ra Arkestra, Native Dancer).
Frequent collaborators and quiet stalwarts of the London jazz scene, the duo have been racking up vast acclaim performing independently and alongside the finest the genre has to offer. Having performed together in Jamie Murray’s solo project "Beat Replacement" just two years ago, they discovered a natural symbiosis and appreciation for free-flowing experimentation. This inspired them to explore their individual playing styles and influences and work together to refine their collaboration into something more precise without compromising on the pliability that their recently found connection has afforded them.
Both Zhenya and Jamie have covered an enormous amount of sonic terrain in their own rights before meeting, and the amalgamation of their most consummate ideas are now being combined to create something that is all at once organic, original, frenetic and highly danceable. Whilst some easy comparisons to their more traditional sensibilities are easily made, their new album ‘Disrespectful’ draws on elements of Breakbeat, Eastern European folk and free jazz, whilst also calling to mind a broad spectrum of influences from the likes of John Zorn to David Bowie to Zach Hill and Miles Davis.
JZ Replacement’s serendipitous partnership has also inspired the duo to look further afield to develop and challenge their sound. In this vein, the album was recorded with LA bass master, Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie, Wayne Krantz, Elvis Costello, Donny McCaslin, Mark Guiliana). Zhenya has already played and recorded with Tim on various projects, including many of their own gigs and their last release.
Their new album ‘Disrespectful’ is an incredibly unique listen, building on a sound that has seen them fast become one of the key proponents of the scene, having already successfully performed at Love Supreme Festival, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London Jazz Festival, Porto Jazz Festival, Rainy Days Festival and Jazz Province Festival. They have also toured internationally across the UK, Germany, Austria, Spain and Russia, and have further dates planned for 2020.

Tim Lefebvre:
Tim Lefebvre is an American bass guitarist. Both as a session musician and band member, he has worked with a wide range of musicians, including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Sting, Empire of the Sun, The Sleepy Jackson, Wayne Krantz, Patti Austin, John Mayer, Jovanotti, Chuck Loeb, Mark Guiliana, Jamie Cullum, Chris Botti, and Knower. A member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, he has performed on film and television soundtracks, including Ocean's Twelve, The Departed, Analyze That, The Sopranos, and 30 Rock.
Called a "musical linguist" by Bass Musician magazine, Lefebvre is proficient in various genres, including rock, jazz, fusion, electronica, and R&B.
Lefebvre played bass on David Bowie's final studio album, Blackstar, released two days before Bowie's death in 2016

Zhenya Strigalev (saxophones, electronics):
Since graduating from London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music, where he was invited on the full scholarship, Zhenya has cut a dynamic path between the London and New York jazz scenes. He’s worked with some of today’s most forward-thinking musicians (including Eric Harland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Tim Lefebvre, Chris "Daddy" Dave, Alex Sipiagin, William Parker, Aaron Parks, Joseph "Foley" McCreary from Miles Davis fame, Larry Grenadier) and has appeared at many prestigious jazz festivals and concert venues, performing extensively in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Austria, Britain, Switzerland, Chile, Argentina, Peru...He has recorded 4 albums with his groups Smiling Organizm and Never Group and his music is regularly played on BBC radio as well as national radio stations in Austria, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Australia, France. You can also see his concerts around the world on the French music TV station, Mezzo Live HD. He enjoys the challenge of shining a light on the undiscovered, and describes the desired on-the-edge thrill that unfolds: “The whole point of what I do is that I need to surprise myself". JZ Replacement is his latest achievement.

"A maverick at the heart of modern jazz."
The Telegraph

"This could be the kind of jazz album that has something for everyone... Universally appealing."
DownBeat Magazine

Jamie Murray (drums)
A forward-thinking and conceptual player, with a solid groove style yet an open-minded approach to free experimentation, his performances are always fresh and exhilarating! With a strong sense of writing, his compositions are personal and original, with an electronic — Jazz — Fusion style attached to them. He has played with most of his contemporaries and peers in the London Jazz Scene as well as crossing into the electronic pop world. He has played and recorded with jazz giants including the Sun Ra Arkestra Members Knoel Scott and Cecil Brooks as well as many other musicians in today's Jazz scene. Currently, Jamie is involved in a number of projects, often touring Europe and the USA as a sideman and also as a bandleader. His current projects “JZ Replacement” and "Beat Replacement" has enabled Jamie to perform across the world in the Jazz/crossover scene. Having performed with his own bands on a regular basis at Ronnie Scott’s and some major festivals including, The Love Supreme, Glastonbury & Afro-punk in New York, Jamie Murray is a name to keep an eye on. Recently Jazzwise magazine featured him in the “Shape of Jazz to come 2019” and “A drummer to watch out for” in Rhythm drummer magazine. His influences spread through a wide spectrum including greats as Vinnie Colaiuta, Elvin Jones, Dan Weiss, Jeff Porcaro, Ed Blackwell & Mark Guiliana just to name a few. He hopes to create a blend of personal expression through this mix of heroes as well as incorporating his own style and ideas.
